Race director notes
Upstream training run on the Lower Salt — launch at Granite Reef Recreation Site, paddle ~3 miles against the current up to Phon D Sutton. Returns the gauge-feet read both ways: lower water is easier upstream but more shallow; higher water means more current to push against. Both sites are Tonto National Forest day-use; need an $8 day pass per vehicle (or America the Beautiful). Most paddlers do this as an out-and-back from Granite Reef — upstream first while fresh, easy float back.
